Recent Club Events

Sunday Painting

We have had two club ‘outdoor painting’ days recently, in May at Tithe Barn House in Taplow, a house of Tudor origin, converted from a Tithe Barn and in June at Taplow Court, the Buddhist Centre near Maidenhead.

We would like to say a big thank you to Ann King for organising the Tithe Barn venue. Both venues were superb locations but unfortunately only a very few members were able to go along.

If outdoor painting is your thing, do make a note in your diary and try to get along to our next meeting, which will be on August 4th.

Here are a few photos of the recent venues to whet your appetite.

The Cookham Festival

A massive thank you to all who took part in the Cookham Festival.

Altogether 33 of our members participated in ‘painting’ events at the festival, along with 19 who were not Cookham Arts Club members, some of whom had never painted before. Also, working in clay, 24 people made hares!

See our website for lots more details about the events, including videos – just click on this link – Cookham Festival.

CONGRATULATIONS to Diane Large for her painting ‘Thames Towpath at Cookham’, winner of The Dandy Arthouse prize.

Monthly Meeting

Our Monthly Meeting in May was a demonstration by Becky Gouverneur. Becky used coloured pencils to develop an animal picture. Each of her finely detailed works takes many hours to finish, so she brought along a partly completed picture of a peacock. She showed us some of the techniques she would use on that, as well as demonstrating some separate elements of animal portraiture. It was a fascinating session showing work in a medium not often seen in our demos.

Member’s News

Some club members who go to Tuesday Painting will have seen Maralin Cottenham working on a painting of a boxer. Here is Maralin presenting it to the boxer in question, Raven Chapman who holds the WBC female featherweight international title.

That work of art has real impact – well done Maralin. Raven has an impressive record; since going professional recently, she has won 8 out of 8 fights and has successfully defended her WBC title three times.

Events in July

Summer Garden Party

It is not long now until our SUMMER GARDEN PARTY, on Sunday July 7th, from 12 to 4pm. This year Rita will be our host in her lovely garden in Marlow.

This has always been an enjoyable, well-supported event and it is so good to meet up with other members we may not have seen for a while. Do come along if you can, partners welcome too!  For full details see your own copy of the newsletter.

We plan to have a quiz and a raffle with some lovely prizes. See you there!!

Monthly Meeting

Monthly Meeting: Thursday 18th July 2 – 4pm in the Parish Centre (Church Gate, Cookham, SL6 9SP).

Critique of ‘New Arts’ by Jo Harris

Jo is an Oxfordshire based artist who works as a Fine and Multi-Media Artist, Illustrator and Collagist. She has studied fine art at the City & Guilds of London Art School and illustration at the University of Gloucestershire. She has lived in far-flung places and always took her sketch books – she never stopped drawing! We look forward to an entertaining critique.

Bring ONE painting and one ’spare’ painting (we will put the spare ones into the critique if there is time). This is a critique of our ‘modern style’ paintingsdifficult to define, but we would like to see an abstract painting or a work with an unusual/new approach, not purely representational, which has not been seen at one of our previous meetings. As usual we will have a vote, with a small prize for the members’ favourite painting.

TIP OF THE MONTH

A small decorator’s roller (e.g. the sponge type for gloss paint) is a really good tool for applying an even background colour with acrylic or oil paint.
